The JAZZ INSTRUMENTALIST ACCREDITATION PROGRAM
MICHAEL R. SCOTT, Ph.D.
You play jazz by having a conversation in the language of music. Think of playing classical or other set compositions as "reading aloud and sticking to the script." Think of playing jazz as ad-libbing when you speak, using the script (the musical composition) as the outline but inventing your own dialogue. Ad-libbing in music is called "improvising" or "improvisation."

I created the Jazz Instrumentalist Accreditation Program for anyone and everyone with an interest in the language of music and especially for high school and middle school students who play in a jazz instrumental ensemble. It is my hope that the Jazz IAP steps will make jazz improvisation accessible to all musicians who have an interest in learning to express themselves using music as their medium.   — Michael Scott

"I recommend Jazz IAP to instrumental music directors who are looking to start a jazz program."
Rich Stichler, Georgia Music Educators' All-State Jazz Ensemble coordinator (2002-2003)

"I just stepped down as the head of All State Jazz for Maryland and was about to start on my own program of this type. Thanks for saving me the time." Earl Jackson, Landon School, Bethesda, MD

"My jazz band made the State Jazz Championships this year for only the second time ever. I hear a difference in how the students are approaching improvisation. They sound much better and much more confident. As we continue, I will be happy to give more feedback, but all I can say right now is BRAVO, and thank you!" David Clark, Thomas Jefferson High School, Council Bluffs, IA

"The National Band Association urges school administrators to evaluate instrumental music programs in terms of
educationally justifiable objectives. Such an evaluation is needed so that administrators can refute criticism by those for
whom the arts are not 'basic'.... Education in instrumental music is similar in purpose to education in English;in both
subjects, understanding and self-expression are the desired outcomes. The emphasis is on individual progress...."
